Benefits of Internships
Internships offer numerous benefits to students. They help you make career decisions by allowing you to evaluate what you do or don't want in a career by giving you the opportunity to try out different careers and industries. You also apply classroom knowledge and gain valuable experience, in which you develop transferable skills to add to your overall marketability in your job search, specifically helping you develop your resume and interviewing skills. Internships help students develop their own personal network as well, which is very important in today's job search.
Things to Consider before Searching for an Internship
Before you begin your internship search you need to decide the industry (non-profit, government, corporate, etc.) in which you would like to intern and the type of position you are seeking (public relations, research, design, etc.). It is also important to decide the semester in which you would like to do your internship, as well as the geographic location that you would prefer. Think about whether or not you need a paid experience, or can you accept an unpaid internship, as many unpaid internships can provide very valuable experiences. And finally consider if you need or want to receive academic credit for your internship. More information regarding credit options can be found in the column on the right. For more information on unpaid internships from the U.S. Department of Labor, click here.
