Preparation Can Reduce Anxiety of Attending Career Fair

A variety of industries will be represented at the 2010 University Career Fair, including:

  • Communications & Media
  • Government & Non-Profit
  • Health & Human Services
  • Management, Banking & Finance
  • Sales & Marketing
  • Science & Technology

The University Career Fair will be held Wednesday, February 10, 2010, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Kansas Union and is an opportunity for University of Kansas students of any major to meet with employers face to face.

University Career Center Offers Internship Resources and Credit Options

In today’s economy, internships are becoming more important in the job search. A recent study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) found that more than three-quarters of responding employers said they prefer candidates with the kind of relevant work experience gained through an internship.

The University Career Center (UCC) offers several resources to help students find internships. Students can utilize the new online Internship Center at KUCareerHawk.com/Internships to find local, national, and international opportunities through KU Career Connections, the international database, and suggested national websites.

Life After College Series and Career Fair for Graduating Seniors

As graduation approaches, students who are concerned about making that transition from school to full-time employment can take advantage of University Career workshops and events in April that will help them go from backpacks to briefcases. Topics include jumpstarting the job search, professional image, business etiquette, and life after college. The month concludes with the Just in Time Career Fair on April 29 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union for graduating students searching for employment.

National Speaker to Kick Off National Career Development Month in November
November is National Career Development Month, and the University Career Center has scheduled a variety of events to help students focus on their career development. National speaker Gregg Levoy will be visiting campus at the beginning of the month and will present a hands-on workshop for students who need help choosing a major.   more...

Honor Society Created to Help Students Find Employment
The University Career Center has formed a local chapter of the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society. Delta Epsilon Iota is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing career advice and assistance to its members. Students must have a 3.30 grade point average or better and must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours to be eligible for membership.  more...

Career Center Offers Online Payment for Career Assessments
Students can now pay online for the four career assessments that the University Career Center offers to assist students with their career planning. The assessments are often the best place to start when making career choices such as choosing a major, exploring occupations, and determining a career plan. The four assessments offered are Strong Interest Inventory, Do What You Are, StrenghtsQuest, and Focus (there is no fee to use Focus).  more...

Career Center Staff Member Certified to Lead Etiquette Dinners
Spring Etiquette Dinner Registration Now Open

University Career Center Assistant Director Erin Wolfram recently received certification from the Etiquette Institute in St. Louis, Mo., so that she could conduct etiquette dinners for University of Kansas students. The University Career Center hosts an etiquette dinner in the spring and fall semesters to provide an entertaining and educational format for students to learn business etiquette for networking and dining with future employers. Communication skills and social savvy can set students apart during the job search process and help them be more successful in their professional careers. Etiquette Institute training topics included verbal communication, visual communication, and social business etiquette.  more...

Attendance at University Career Fair Critical in Poor Economy
Even though the U.S. economy looks grim, the University Career Fair is the must-attend event this February for all KU students from freshman through graduating seniors. The Career Fair will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, in the Kansas Union. Graduating seniors can visit with representatives from companies that are hiring to discuss full-time employment opportunities, and other students can look into internship opportunities to help them be more competitive in future job searches.  more...

Parents Have Their Say..About Their College-Age Children's Career Decisions
Families, parents and guardians in particular, play a significant role in the occupational aspirations and career goal development of their children. Without parental approval or support, students and young adults are often reluctant to pursue—or even explore—diverse career possibilities. Although parents acknowledge their role and attempt to support the career development of their children, parental messages contain an underlying message of “don’t make the same mistakes that I did.” These interactions may influence adolescents and young adults to select specific collegiate majors or pursue particular occupations.
